CHAPTER ELEVEN

Susie

Aura’s statement is met with silence and a heaping pile of disbelief from Mark and me. “We’re not human?” my boyfriend scoffs. “Yeah, I think you made a mistake there. I think we’d both know if we were from somewhere other than Earth.” He chuckles, and I can’t help but join in. I’m feeling emotionally wrung out from everything, and the cocktail has a heady kick, so I’m also feeling the effects from that too. Together, it’s making me somewhat giddy.

“Oh no, Susie is from Earth, but you, you sexy snack, are most definitely extraterrestrial with an emphasis on the extra.” Aura’s eyes sparkle, and they waggle their eyebrows mischievously. “The Jelliad scanned you, and they are infallible. You, my good doctor, are Celestian, just like Savannah.”

Mark’s chuckles break off, and his mouth drops open. “You’re serious? You actually think I’m an alien like all of you? But I have no powers and definitely no wings. There isn’t a feather on my body, and I should know, since the small amount of hair I do have is kept well manscaped.” My boyfriend sounds a little hysterical by the end of his small tirade, but he is right. He does manscape to perfection, and there isn’t a feather to be seen. He has very little hair too, which I appreciate immensely.

“That’s the Celestian in you. We don’t have a lot of body hair,” Savannah comments conversationally.

Mark jumps to his feet and tries to pace around the pit, but the cushions make it too hard, so he climbs out, and the rest of us watch as he stalks around the boudoir, trying to get his thoughts in order. He pulls his hair and mutters quietly to himself, and I start to worry. I get up to go to him, but Xane stops me.

“Hang on, let Aura finish the story.”

“According to the Jelliad, you are Celestian, and they can tell that you were brought to Earth. They were not able to ascertain who brought you to Earth, just that you were. The reason you have no powers or wings is because Celestian children are powerless and wingless until the age of six, and need to go through a ceremony to have both their wings and powers activated. You were kidnapped before this ceremony, so you have never had that.”

Mark stops pacing and sinks to his knees in shock. Again, I try to get up, but Aura beats me to it. In the blink of an eye, they disappear from their perch in the cushions and reappear on the ground next to Mark. They wrap their arms around him, rubbing their hand up and down his back, cooing words of comfort.

“Let me go, Xane.” I struggle against him, needing to help my boyfriend through this.

“Hang on, poppet. There’s more.”

I sag in his arms. How much more is Mark going to be able to take before he breaks?

“Mark.” Savannah climbs out of the pit, her beautiful ombre purple wings rustling behind her as she moves toward Aura and Mark.
